Rockridge Parish
Our Parishes are organized around a common geography (neighborhoods) and a common need (mission).
Our Neighborhoods
At the moment, the Rockridge Parish consists of Rockridge, Temescal, and Piedmont. As God blesses us, creates new relationships, and opens up opportunities, we would eventually we would like to create Parishes for each of these neighborhoods.
Prior to the building of the Bay Bridge in 1936, Rockridge was a sleepy neighborhood of cottages and bungalows owned by those who preferred the quiet life to the urban bustle of San Francisco across the bay. Today Rockridge is a dynamic and ethnically diverse mix of cosmopolitan professionals who work all over the Bay Area. The weather in this particular microclimate is often sunny and warm; the commute from the Rockridge BART is easy; the homes on the leafy residential streets have been charmingly restored; and the area's main thoroughfare, College Avenue, is lined with atmospheric cafes, gourmet restaurants, independent bookstores and antiques shops that people go out of their way to patronize. In the hamlet of Rockridge, a down-home feel prevails.
Temescal is one of North Oakland's oldest and most storied neighborhoods. In fact, it began as a separate village, a stop along the railway line that ran up Telegraph Avenue from downtown Oakland to Berkeley. The main business corridor of Telegraph Avenue is bustling with shops and restaurants whose owners found an affordable neighborhood in which to hang their shingles. From the south, Oakland's Koreatown spills into this neighborhood, while the northern edge has several restaurants catering to the Eritrean diaspora that has rooted itself in the East Bay.
Piedmont is a city with a population of over 10,000 residents. Piedmont is a small, primarily residential community. Because of its school system, low crime rate, mild weather, and high property values, it is regarded as one of the more desirable communities to live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Our Mission
UP - Loving God
Our Parish worships together on Sundays and gathers at least once per month to cultivate relationships and serve the community. We also gather a few times a month in small-sized Community Groups (8-12 people) to share a meal, pray, read Scripture, discuss what God is saying to us, and discern what we are going to do about it.
IN - Loving One Another
Our Parish seeks to take care of one another when we are in need (i.e. sickness, trauma, new baby, unemployment, etc.), we take care of the church (welcoming newcomers, hosting Sunday worship services, etc.), and we encourage one another to follow Jesus and live out the life of the kingdom of God.
OUT - Loving Our Neighbors
Our Parish serves
Claremont Middle School, which is in the heart of Rockridge but has 65% its student body receiving reduced or free lunch. We also seek to reach out to the people in our neighborhoods and networks who are spiritually open and curious in order to share with them the love of God and the good news of his kingdom.
